Can Dogs Eat Watermelon?

A question we are often asked, especially during the summer months is: Can my dog eat watermelon? And the good news is that yes they can.

Watermelon is a great treat for your dog and hydrating too, given that it is made up of 92% water. Watermelon is very juicy, tasty and low in calories. It also has great health benefits. It is packed with vitamins such as vitamin A, B1, B5, B6, and C as well as high in magnesium and potassium making it a super healthy snack for your dog, this in turn hugely benefits your dog’s skin and coat.

Fresh or frozen watermelon is recommended for your dog. Frozen melon can also be used to help your dog cool down in the summer months. Again, as a rule of thumb, avoid any fruit that comes out of a can. Canned fruit can be full of syrup, which mean high sugar content and also preservatives. Watermelon contains natural sugar so if your dog has a sensitive stomach make sure you don’t over feed them. Watermelon can also be mixed into your dog’s regular food for an added tasty treat.

When preparing watermelon for your dog it is important to prepare it correctly. You must ensure all seeds are removed and the rind is cut off the melon as this can cause problems with digestion and could also result in choking. It is also advised that you cut the melon into small pieces ensuring your dog will not choke. Try your dog with a few small pieces of watermelon first, that way you can ensure your dog does not have an adverse reaction to it.

Our own dogs love watermelon too, and just like we do with strawberries, we mix up watermelon in with their regular food which adds a bit of variety to mealtime,

We always recommend that you contact your Vet before feeding your dog fruit. Your Vet can recommend the correct amount of watermelon for your dog.
